Crate Toyota 4Runner Engines for Sale

There are five generations of Toyota 4Runners on the road today. The first 4-wheel, off road runner appeared in US auto showrooms late in the 1984 model year. Toyota called this revolutionary vehicle the 4Runner since it could go anywhere with the comfort and the utility of a passenger car. The American car market loved the first generation. It had two doors and a removable hard top, which was in the form of a fiberglass shell over the cargo area. There were two models available and both of them were powered by 2.4litre 22R inline-4 cylinder engine with a 5-speed transmission. They had manual front locking hubs and both were 4-wheel drive models.

The second generation 4Runner made its debut in mid-1989. A 2WD and a 4WD were available as a 2 door or 4 door model. Shift-on-the-fly 4-wheel drive became an option that year, and the new rear suspension provided a more comfortable ride. The 3VZ-E engine got a new oxygen sensor, and the A340F automatic transmission is offer with the 22R engine. In 1991 the 22R engine is discontinued and a new 22R-E V6 engine is offered. In 1993, the 22R-E is modified to meet California emission standards.

The third generation 4Runner was introduced in 1996 with a 2.7 litre 150 horsepower 4-cylinder engine as well as a powerful DOHC 3.4 litre V6, which was available on all models except the 2-wheel drive automatic. The V6 had a towing capacity of 5,000 lbs and both engines complied with OBD II emission standards.

The 5VZ-FE engine was in the lineup for 1998. The 2.7 litre 16 valve DOHC engine was cranking out 150 horsepower at 4,800 rpms and 177ft-lbs of torque at 4,000 rpms. EPA mileage estimates were 19 mpg city and 24 mpg highway. In 2001 the 4-cylinder engine disappeared and the 3RZ-FE and the 5VZ-FE engines with a manual transmission are also discontinued. The 5VZ-FE engine with an automatic is the only engine available.

The fourth generation 4Runner introduced in 2003 came with a 4.0 litre VVT-i all aluminum 245 horsepower V6 under the hood and an optional DOHC 4.7 litre i-Force V8 with 235 horsepower with 320 ft-lbs of torque was also offered. The fifth generation 2010 and 2011 4Runner engine choices are the new 268 horsepower, 4.0 litre V6 with dual VVT-i and a new 2.7 litre L4 with 168 horsepower and 184 ft-lbs of torque.
