When someone asks me about purchasing a 4.0 liter six cylinder Jeep engine my first thought pattern is that a new crate engine is the best way to go. The 4.0 was discontinued at the end of the 2006 model year as the Jeep Wrangler got Chrysler’s new V6. The 4.0 L was also referred to as a 258 cubic inch inline 6 cylinder engine, we know exactly what you want when you ask for 4.0 Jeep engines for sale.
The 4.0L was strong like a bull and not a bad performing engine. There were a couple of basic design issues, not considered terminal, including leaks; the oil pump was notorious for wearing out at around 150,000 miles.
The TPS (throttle position sensor) on the 1989/1990 models had serious reliability problems.
Tech Note: The 258 can be identified by the 4th character of the engine build date code (“A”, “B”, “C” or “M”), stamped into the engine block below and between the number 2 and 3 spark plugs. An engine stamped with “B” is an early 258 with a 7.6:1 compression ratio. “A” and “B” are engines with 1-barrel carburetors, while “C” and “M” are 2-barrel. “M” originated in Mexico. Other codes (“E”, “F”, “K” and “L”) are 232 engines.
Back on subject, why is a crate engine the best choice? First off, our new crate engines have been manufactured without the small but annoying problems, like engine oil leaks and redesigned oil pump. The beauty of a crate engine is in part because the design flaws are engineered out when they are remanufactured. Crate engines provide the most reliable and potent form of power for your vehicle if you need a replacement engine.
Another point I want to make is that while many people are interested in second hand engines and ‘junk yard’ motors, the value can’t come close to a crate engine once you know how affordable a new crate engine is. It is also the way to exact 100% peace of mind when the cargo in your car or van is highly valuable, like your kids.
Don’t compromise yourself, you owe it to yourself and your family to make a call and find out how affordable a replacement crate engine is. Every crate engine for sale has pure value built into it.
